This book presents a little-known and ingenious artifact of the Roman world: a small puzzle padlock whose font plate bears a face or 'mask' of 'Celtic' style. The padlocks were designed to secure small bags or pouches and their distribution extended across Europe with the majority found in the Danubian region and in the vicinity of Aquileia. The authors examine the cultural context, the origins and uses of the padlocks, and provide detailed solutions to the puzzle mechanisms. The publication provides a fully illustrated catalog of the known 156 examples, categorizes their types according to construction and style, and explores the technicalities of the subject by the process of constructing replica mask puzzle padlocks.

= "The first volume of Egyptian Hoards offers a complete list of 278 hoards containing Ptolemaic coins in gold, silver, or bronze, found in Egypt and in the sphere of influence of the Lagid kings. Forty-nine of these hoards are documented here for the first time. The volume consists predominantly of articles presenting and analyzing the new hoards, enlarged hoards, and older hoards restudied in light of recent numismatic scholarship. For the most part the articles are generously illustrated: the plates feature more than 3500 coins in color. Following in the tradition of the Inventory of Greek Coin Hoards (IGCH) and the ten volumes of Coin Hoards (CH), Egyptian Hoards I collects and analyzes the coin hoards which constitute a major contribution to the study of the monetarization of Egypt and the circulation of coinage in the country, with very important implications for our understanding of the economy of the region."

This book is the first volume in the series Studies in Classical Archaeology, founded and edited by professors of classical archaeology, Achim Lichtenberger and Rubina Raja. This volume sets out the agenda for this series. It achieves this by familiarizing readers with a wide range of themes and material groups, and highlighting them as core areas of traditional classical archaeology, despite the fact that some have hitherto been neglected.00Themes presented in this volume include Greek and Roman portraiture and sculpture, iconography, epigraphy, archaeology, numismatics, the Mediterranean, settlement patterns, landscape archaeology, historiography, and urban archaeology. Additionally, essays on topics such as the early Islamic period and portraiture in the Near East serve to broaden the themes encompassed by this work, and demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge in the field. The volume also offers discussions about a variety of material groups, time frames, and regions that have recently come to the fore as areas that should increasingly be considered as belonging to?and more crucially, informing? classical archaeology. The multi-disciplinary essays contained within this volume, contributed by prominent scholars from across the world, thus represent the status quo of classical archaeology, as well as tracing both how the discipline has developed over time and how it should progress in the future

This volume presents the proceedings of the 22nd Annual Egyptological Colloquium held at the British Museum in 2013, augmented by additional papers. It reflects an ongoing research focus, supported by new fieldwork, on the relationship between Egypt and Nubia during the New Kingdom (1550-1070 BC). Until recently characterised in terms that mirror the ideology promulgated on ancient temple walls - the pharaonic state enjoying complete political control and cultural dominance over 'wretched Kush' - the re-assessment of this relationship has foregrounded models of cultural entanglement and hybridisation. The papers reflect a variety of disciplinary approaches - archaeological, epigraphic, architectural, environmental and bioarchaeological - which are helping to provide a more nuanced understanding of what it was like to live in colonial Kush during the later second millennium BC.
